Introduction

Welcome to the Concrete Lab: Fresh Properties of Concrete, a virtual laboratory dedicated to the study of the behaviour and characteristics of concrete in its fresh state. Fresh concrete refers to concrete immediately after mixing and before the onset of setting and hardening. The properties of concrete during this stage are crucial in determining the quality, durability, and performance of the finished structure. Characteristics such as workability, consistency, cohesiveness, resistance to segregation, bleeding, and setting time influence the ease with which concrete can be mixed, transported, placed, compacted, and finished on site. Understanding the fresh properties of concrete is essential for engineers and construction professionals to ensure that concrete can be effectively handled while maintaining quality and achieving the desired structural performance.

Objective

  • To recall the fundamental concepts related to the behaviour and properties of concrete in its fresh state.

  • To understand the theoretical principles governing workability, setting time, air entrainment, and the effects of admixtures on fresh concrete.

  • To apply standard testing procedures for evaluating fresh concrete properties and assessing concrete quality.

  • To analyse, interpret, and present experimental results related to the performance of fresh concrete mixtures.
