Introduction

In this virtual laboratory, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of metallurgical sample preparation for microscopic analysis. They will explore the construction and working principles of microscopes, gaining insights into the intricate details of metallurgical microstructures. The lab will cover various microscopy techniques, equipping students with the skills needed for advanced microstructural analysis.
A key component of the course is the study of the Fe-C (iron-carbon) phase diagram, a cornerstone of metallurgy, to understand phase transformations and their impact on material properties. Students will also examine the role of heat treatment kinetics in shaping steel microstructures, enabling them to connect processing conditions with resultant material characteristics. Furthermore, the lab will delve into the microstructures and applications of various metals, providing a robust foundation in materials science and engineering that bridges academic theory with industrial relevance.

Objective

The virtual lab on sample preparation and metallography provides a detailed understanding of the processes involved in preparing samples for microstructural analysis. It also offers comprehensive insights into various microscopy techniques, microstructural analysis, the Fe-C phase diagram, and the microstructures and applications of different types of steels and metals.
