Introduction

Welcome to the Manufacturing Processes (Foundry & Casting) Virtual Simulation Lab. Casting is a manufacturing process in which molten metal is poured into a pre-designed mould cavity and then left to solidify. Final solidified product of this process is known as casting which needs various post-processing operations. Using this Virtual simulation lab students will be able to visualize and simulate various casting experiments taught in the university, on his/her computer.

Objective

  1. Students will be able to: Readily identify all the components and function of a mould with their proper arrangement.
  2. Students will be able to: Observe the formation of gating system stepwise in drag and cope respectively.
  3. Students will be able to: Pour the molten metal into the pouring basin and observe the flow of the metal throughout the gating system.
  4. Students will be able to: Study different types of common casting defects that are generated and get to know a possible solution for every defect.
  5. Students will be able to: Rationally answer every question related to the process of sand casting.
  6. To study and observe various stages of casting through demonstration of the sand casting process.
  7. To perform strength tests on sands.
  8. To determine the percentage of clay present in base sand.
  9. To determine the permeability number of green sand, core sand and raw sand.
  10. To find the distribution of sand grains using a set of sieves and obtain the average grain fineness number.
